This building was founded in 1900 by the Brussels philanthropic association 'Les Marçunvins'. This association was established in 1875 and provided financial support to young students. Later, they also organized holiday camps for underprivileged children. The location in Westende was ideal due to the healthy sea air.
During World War I, this home was leveled. However, it was rebuilt in 1930 and subsequently expanded. The main building was designed by the Brussels architects Govaerts and Van Vaerenbergh. It is a beautiful example of modernist architecture: the building is only two stories high, has a flat roof, and is completely painted white. Rounded and sharp corners playfully alternate. The detached classroom wing, in matching architectural style, dates from 1935 and was designed by architect Evers.
Both buildings were connected in 1960 by an annex designed by architect Paul Vincent. Efforts were made to use as much wood as possible to keep the structure as light as possible. Openings were created in the brick walls at various heights so that the children could see the sea through the wall. This is no longer possible now due to dune formation between the building and the beach.
The entire complex is beautifully situated amidst the dunes and was used until the early 21st century as accommodation for groups and schools. There was also an exhibition space and a cultural function for associations. Today, the building is used by the local Chiro youth organization and the intercommunal rescue services.
