Building casino of Spa

Description

Since the 16th century , Spa has had natural – in its own words – healing water sources .

The place is becoming a synonym for places with a natural water source that is claimed to have a healing effect. From the 18th century, the place also became known for its casino and once again Spa has a first in house. In 1762 the construction of the Casino de Spa started. The aim is to create a luxurious haven for the local elite . That means a complete meeting place with ballrooms, theaters and games rooms.

In 1774 it is completed: the first casino in the world opens its doors. Initially things are going well, until the revolution of Liège arrives, which causes several fires and a ban on gambling in Belgium. Also in the 20th century the casino has to suffer. After a fierce fire in 1917 , a thorough renovation followed that lasted no less than 10 years. Two more renovations followed in 1980 and 1981, which should revive the old glory days. The result? When you walk in you notice that we are talking about 250 years of history. Old glory , it has something.

When entering the town of Spa you can see the old, beautiful building from the main road. This means that the casino not only scores with enthusiasts of games of chance, but also with those interested in architecture and culture . Just the thought that this casino is almost 250 years old evokes a special feeling. The building itself has rooms for business events, private parties, exhibitions, birthdays and of course what it's all about: the gaming rooms themselves.

Did you know?

- The Spa Casino is almost 100 years older than the famous Monte Carlo Casino . The casino in Monaco was “only” completed in 1863.

- The current appearance of the casino dates back to 1918. Nevertheless, the casino has been renovated a number of times, partly due to devastating fires. The last major renovation dates from 1980-1981.

- The initiative for the casino came from the 2 mayors of the city. Construction was started in 1762 by order of Xhrouet Lambert and Gérard de Leau.
