The Ardennes played a crucial role during World War II. First in 1940, when the Germans launched a surprise attack that led to their occupation of Western Europe. And in the winter of 1944-1945 with the Ardennes Offensive or the Battle of the Bulge. The Nazis made a desperate attempt to break through the Allied lines and advance to Antwerp. The fighting lasted more than six weeks and cost many lives on both sides. But Antwerp remained spared. With this history in mind, you can explore the region today, as the battle has left numerous traces.
