Castle Neufcour

Descripción

Kasteel Neufcour has been nicely renovated again, but that was not the case a few decades ago. Kasteel Neufcour is a classical building from the 18th century. In 1923, the castle was publicly sold to the priest of Strijtem. What his project with the house was, is not clear. What is certain is that he cleared the park to pay part of the purchase price with the proceeds. Ten years later, he sold the castle to the sisters of the monastery of Eizeringen. This happened after mediation by the Diocese and for exactly the same price that the priest had paid for the castle 10 years earlier. This suggests that the diocese forced the sisters to buy the house to rescue the priest from financial problems. Until 1945, it served as a French-speaking boarding school for girls and boys. After WWII, the castle was left empty. There is mention of explosion damage from a bomb during WWII. In 1978, the eastern wall of the castle partially collapsed. The sisters applied for a demolition permit, but it was denied. In the early '90s, the sisters applied for a demolition permit for the second time, which was again denied. The government protected the castle as a monument and the surroundings as a village view (this extends to the rectory and some facades on the church square). At the end of the '90s, the idea arose to restore the castle and use it as a new peace court for Lennik. The former park would be restored as a public park. In that context, a BPA was approved in 1999 that designated the castle as a zone for public utility and the surroundings as parkland. Due to the Copernicus reform, this plan was not executed. In 2005, the castle, the coach house, and the surrounding meadows were sold to a private individual. In 2006, the restoration works began. Since July 2010, the castle has been inhabited again.
