German Military Cemetery Vladslo

As early as the Battle of the Yser in October 1914, German fallen soldiers were buried in the surrounding Praet forest. In the 1950s, several German cemeteries were merged into the current cemetery in Vladslo. Now there are more than 25,000 soldiers here. Peter Kollwitz also has his final resting place here. He was killed in action in 1914. His mother, artist Käthe Kollwitz, honoured her son with the sculpture 'The Grieving Parents'. This monument can be found at the back of the cemetery, near the grave of Peter Kollwitz.

On the occasion of 100 years of World War I, the Praet Forest and the German cemetery were connected by a walking circuit. In the forest you can still see a number of memories of the German occupation.
