Just a stone’s throw from our route, don’t miss this old cemetery, which has become one of the most unusual places to walk in Brussels. The demographic expansion of the 19th century and the closure of the nearby cemeteries of Saint-Job (1871) and Saint-Pierre (1876) resulted in this cemetery quickly filling up. It has been disused since 1958. Take in the abundant vegetation of this timeless site and you may even come across the grave of the cartoonist Hergé, which is, surprisingly, quite sober! The cemetery is also home to the tombs of the architects Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar and Paul Hankar. More generally, this cemetery offers an interesting look at the bourgeois funerary heritage of the wealthy municipality of Uccle. It also gives you an idea of the unique Ashkenazi Jewish burials.
