Waterloo Battlefield

The battlefield of Waterloo is the area where the Battle of Waterloo took place on June 18, 1815, currently protected and listed as part of the exceptional real estate heritage of the Walloon Region. The site is in a state close to that of the 19th century. During that century, the region was only minimally affected by industrialization and retained its agricultural vocation. At the beginning of the 20th century, in order to preserve the battlefield from chaotic urbanization and land speculation due to its proximity to Brussels, the preservation project was born. The British, sensitive to this protection, provided funds raised through public subscription to enable the Belgian government to compensate the landowners. The Belgian Parliament passed a law on March 26, 1914, protecting the site of the battle. This was the first law of its kind in Belgium. This law has so far been respected, with the exception of the convent of the Dominican Sisters of Fichermont, which was built in 1929 in the northeast part of the battlefield with the agreement of the government of the time.
