Calf forest

Kalverbos is a nature reserve in the Belgian town of Heusden in the province of East Flanders. The area is located just north of the Scheldt, south of the R4 and extends to the bridge over the Scheldt that leads to Melle. Before the construction of the dikes, the area was flooded by the Scheldt, more specifically the Sea Scheldt. That changed in the early seventies of the twentieth century when the Ringvaart was connected to the Sea Scheldt, near the bridge of Melle. Sand and clay were removed, dikes were constructed and part of the site was raised with dredging silt. Another part remained low-lying pasture. The old sand extraction pit evolved into a lake full of life. You will find the pintail, shoveler, gadwall and grebe. The reed warbler and reed bunting reside in the reed beds.
