Parish Church of the Sacred Heart district of Durmen

Durmen without number (next to number 178). Parish Church of the Sacred Heart. A modern church replaces the demolished neo-Gothic church of Durmen, built under the impetus of Canon Adolf-Bernard Van der Moeren. The old church was built in 1888 to a design by architect Jan Haché (Ghent). The church was consecrated on September 17, 1888. By Royal Decree of November 6, 1896, Durmen was recognized as a parish. In 1899, under the direction of architect Jan Haché, the parish church was enlarged. In May 1908 three stained-glass windows were installed in the choir and in 1909 two stained-glass windows above the side altars from the workshop of Joseph Osterrath Jr. in Tilff near Liège. The church was demolished in June 1975, the foundation stone of the new church was laid on June 27, 1975. The new church was solemnly consecrated by the bishop of Ghent, Monsignieur Van Peteghem, on July 4, 1976. At the end of 2006, a tower clock and a small carillon with twelve bells were added to the semi-detached campanile to the right of the church building.
