Quai De La Ribuée

The most restricted quay along the Meuse, its name comes from a contraction of Rive Buée. The term buée, itself derived from the Walloon bouwêye, refers to laundry. Before the river was canalized, the shore of Ribuée was ideally situated away from navigation maneuvers, allowing laundresses to do their work there. However, from the 15th century onwards, this shore served as a boat parking area. The quay, for its part, was created during the reconstruction of the Arch Bridge in the second half of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the place, which was often a victim of the Meuse floods at that time, was raised to a level high enough to prevent new major floods, which, like those of 1880, 1920, and 1927, would inundate the city center. Today, this stretch of quay immediately extending from the Batte has little more than a distinctive name, reminding those most aware of a part of the activities that used to take place there.
