The artist Yves Bosquet (Uccle, 1939).
The artwork: 1985
Yves Bosquet studied ceramics at the Higher Institute of Architecture and Visual Arts, La Cambre. He has a sharp observational ability and an intense attention to the outside world, which he uses to create strikingly similar portraits. He pays special attention to the faithful depiction of faces, with a romantic touch of tenderness, innocence, and serenity in his representations of children. In his works, the artist diminishes himself and brings the model to the forefront.
In each model, the humility of the artist is noticeable. The model itself stands out in all its details. The entire range of human emotions is addressed, portrayed with a great deal of tenderness.
In 1992, Yves Bosquet discovered the possibilities of wood as an artistic material. Wood also made him realize that larger dimensions were his way of expressing himself.
This involves several groups of terracotta sculptures in white and brown tones that refer to the final resting place of Queen Elisabeth, Castle Stuyvenbergh, conceived as a tribute to the art-loving queen and the royal family. The artist, who usually works from a live model, executed the 25 sculptures based on photographic material. They were partially colored with engobes and partially glazed.
The artist depicts Queen Elisabeth during various periods of her life, with her children and grandchildren, as well as with individuals who were dear to her, such as Albert Einstein, Emile Verhaeren, or Jules Bordet. Yves Bosquet was also responsible for the monumental concrete elements that represent the queen's lodge in the Music Conservatory, the entrance of the Royal Palace of Brussels, and that of Laeken.
