Roman Highway

To the left of Breisemstraat lies Galgeveld. The name refers to a medieval execution site where criminals were mercilessly hanged. In the distance to the left, you can see a tall factory chimney from the former brick factory Nelissen. Just before that, a Roman burial mound was once erected. Archaeologists have also found remains of a Merovingian burial site (6th to 7th century) in this area. The bronze figurines of Mercury and Venus that you can see in the museum
'het Toreke' were also excavated here. If you look to the right from the street, you can see in the distance the white water tower of Vissenaken. There is presumably also a Roman burial chamber underground.
