Carmel de Mehagne

The Carmel of Mehagne, located in Chaudfontaine, in the province of Liège, is an active religious house. As its name suggests, it was initially founded and inhabited by a community of Carmelite sisters before being entrusted to the charismatic community of the Chemin Neuf. The first Carmel in Liège was founded as early as 1249, but at that time it was solely a male establishment. It was following the Lenten preaching of Jean Soreth in 1451 that a female Carmel community was founded. The first house is located at the entrance of the Saint-Léonard suburb, thanks to a legacy, and four women settle there; they form the first female religious congregation in the city. The foundation is thriving: it quickly sends nine sisters to establish the first female Carmel in France.
