The Little Heads

Located in the vast forest massif covering the Sinemurian cuesta, this Lorraine site corresponds to the source area of a small left bank tributary of the Ton, at the place called "Les Petites Têtes," on the northern edge of the village of Châtillon. The central part consists of plots of resinous plantations recently acquired by the non-profit organization Ardenne and Gaume and deforested during the winter of 2017. The aim of these works is to restore vegetation typical of heath and sandy grassland, remnants of which still exist here and there. Other neighboring parcels of the new reserve have also been exploited in recent years and are colonized by groups of clearings. The perimeter contains several rare species, such as clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum) and the creeping lady's tresses orchid (Goodyera repens), a small orchid linked to pine forests that is in decline in the Walloon Region.
