The Citadel of Namur funicular is a tourist transport service that opened on May 8, 2021 , connecting Place Maurice Servais to the citadel esplanade.
The journey takes six to nine minutes , depending on the number of passengers. More than twenty years after its closure , it replaces the previous funicular , which took a different route. This cable car is a pulsating gondola, consisting of four trains with three cabins.
The route was chosen to cut down as few trees as possible and to avoid the underground passages of the citadel.
On June 25, 1997, the old cable car was temporarily shut down due to the risk of landslides and for safety reasons. For forty years the cable car transported almost five million passengers . This temporary closure eventually became permanent: In 2002 an arson completely destroyed the valley station. All hope of resuming activities is definitively lost. In August 2005, the thirteen pylons of the cable car were dismantled.
