The bridge to nowhere and het Eilandje

Although this bridge leads to 'no man's land', because you can't leave with any cars and the part is mainly used as parking, it offers a nice overview of the location where the Bruges-Ghent canal and the Schipdonk canal intersect. At the time, the Schipdonk Canal was one of the first Belgian infrastructure works to divert the smelly flax water in the Lys, from Deinze, so that it would not reach Ghent. A kind of water lock was built here, allowing the water under the Ghent-Bruges canal to flow in large pipes – now that has disappeared. The estate ter Schipdonk, which stood here, gave its name to this canal.
