The Sijsjesvijver

In the green heart of Ganshoren, the municipality wanted to gain insight into the paths that rainwater takes to complete the water cycle and reconnect the waterways within its territory with the various meshes. One of the important places to restore along this waterway is located by the Sijsjesvijver. The area, which was placed on the protection list in 1995, was left to its own devices, and pioneer species turned it into a very dark thicket where the pond tends to disappear under organic deposits. The Sijsjesvijver is the last link for reconnecting the water with the Ganshoren marsh. The Sijsjesvijver, and the pond of the De Rivieren castle extending from it, are located at the hinge point between the upper and lower parts of the valley. This project is coordinated with the private company responsible for managing De Rivieren castle, the Royal Commission for Monuments and Landscapes, and Leefmilieu Brussels, along with the municipality and various non-profit organizations. The aim is to restore the water-rich character of the area and to allow it to play its ecological role again, both in the blue and green networks.
