As part of an integrated management of rainwater, the municipality of Vorst has undertaken several development works in the public space, preferably also providing for planting in that space. One of the first pilot elements in the project 'Watercourses and biodiversity' is the transformation of the Auguste Lumièresquare into a rain garden. A rain garden is a landscape element designed for the storage, infiltration, or delay of runoff water from impervious surfaces such as roofs, terraces, roads, and sidewalks. This garden enables the water to be re-infiltrated as close as possible to where it falls and thus offers a number of added values, such as replenishing groundwater or combating flooding, while at the same time providing cooling in the city and promoting biodiversity. Moreover, the municipality of Vorst, near the Lumière rain garden, is busy reconstructing three roads: Kersbeek, Glasblazerij, and Bemptlaan. The work is not yet completed, but the runoff water will be redirected to rain gardens and storage areas under the parking lots. A sedimentation and basin storage area will also be set up on the Bia Boucquetsquare. |
