Meet the superheroes of Sint-Andries

The Habbekrats youth house is located behind this colourful mural. The youth workers that work hard every day to help the vulnerable young people in the Sint-Andries neighbourhood are superheroes, a fact that these three street artists wanted to highlight. We recognise a number of famous superheroes. The Habbekrats mascot is keeping a watchful eye over the children and young people who live and play in the neighbourhood.

Leaving a mark on the neighbourhood

Not everyone knows what goes on behind this façade. The mural lifts a tip of the veil. Habbekrats leaves a mark on the neighbourhood, just like the superheroes on the wall. “That is why I like this work so much”, says street art expert Arno Arnouts, who works for a youth service himself. “You can’t praise youth workers enough for the work they do”.

Street artists join forces

The mural of the youth work heroes is a joint creation of A Squid Called Sebastian, Links One and Flash. These collabs are a frequent occurrence in the street art work. You can also see work by Links One and Flash in Muntplein, elsewhere on this tour. A Squid Called Sebastian (ASCS) was born in the USA, where he discovered street art. In 1989, he moved to Ghent with his family. Street art was just emerging in Belgium at the time, but he had plenty of opportunities to admire the work of Renaissance and surrealist artists. He now lives for and off his art, which makes him travel around the world.
