According to many residents of Mechelen, the IJzerenleen is the Champs Elysees of Mechelen.

Luckily there are fewer cars here, but imposing facades , beautiful shops and one of the oldest town halls in Flanders . A small stream used to flow here between Dyle and Koolvliet, where a fish market was located. The IJzerenleen takes its name from the iron gates next to the Vlietje, which are still there. However, the fleece was already covered in the 16th century.

The 15th, 16th and 17th century facades are not original but were rebuilt after an architectural competition after the devastation of the First World War.
