Machelen put

Machelen was first mentioned in 697 , 820 and 830 in the annals of St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent. It was known, among other things, as Machlinio, which meant mighty.

The village center with church arose near the Leie, on an eminence on the right outer bend, called "Machelen-put".

It is picturesquely located on an unused arm of the Leie. That well was almost filled in . This could be avoided, partly thanks to Roger Raveel , an artist born and raised in Machelen. Since 1999, the painter has had his own museum in his native village.

Every year, on Saturday during the 1st weekend of September, tub dancing takes place at Machelen Put.
