Roothoek Art Village

Roothoek Kunstdorp is a rest stop on the towpath along the Leie near the art village Machelen-aan-de-Leie. There are seating and reclining benches and bike racks.
It is part of the 13 experience points along the Leie. In the territory of Zulte, there is a second experience point, namely the bike and walking bridge over the Leie.

A connection will be created from this place along the Leie and the art village.

Art village Machelen-aan-de-Leie is the birthplace of artist Roger Raveel. He lived and worked there his whole life.
The village was his greatest source of inspiration.
In the Roger Raveel Museum, you can see his works. Regular exhibitions are also organized here.
Art in the streets created by him and throughout the village includes the poles of the unlimited and Plein de Nieuwe Visie.

The artist Martin Wallaert is considered one of the last living artists from 150 years of Latem art groups.
This artist still lives and works in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, and his studio is regularly accessible.
The heritage site Villa ter Ide/Atelier Martin Wallaert is included in the network “Flemish masters in their place” as part of the master tour along the Leie Masters along the Leie | Flemish Masters in Situ by Visit Flanders.

Work by the artist is present in the public space and paintings are displayed in the Leiespot restaurant De Karper. His ties to the Latem art groups are currently being recorded as well as his works.

Opposite his house is the birthplace of painter Roger De Backer.

Also, the Dutch writer-poet Gerard Reve lived the last years of his life in the art village and is buried there.
On the side of Villa ter Ide, his poem "Credo" is engraved.

The municipal exhibition space Huis De Leeuw is located in the heart of the art village and can be rented for exhibitions.
