Rochefort Castle

High above the charming town of Rochefort, on a rocky spur on the edge of the Famenne, tower the impressive remains of the Château des Comtes de Rochefort .

This medieval ruin exudes history and offers a unique glimpse into the glorious, yet turbulent, centuries of the Belgian Ardennes. Built in the 11th century by the lords of Montaigu, the castle served for centuries as a strategic stronghold and residence of powerful noble families. The thick walls, keep, and ancient towers still bear witness to its military importance and the numerous sieges it withstood.

Under Count Charles-Albert de Loewenstein, the castle was expanded in the 17th century into a stately residence with French gardens, reception rooms, and even its own theater. After the French Revolution, the castle fell into disrepair. Local residents even used it as a quarry to build houses!

Today, the castle is a fascinating archaeological site where young and old can explore. During a guided tour —often led by the legendary "witch Emelyne"—you can relive the daily lives of knights, counts, and servants. Climb to the highest point for a breathtaking view of Rochefort and the surrounding forests and hills.

On the site, you'll find an impressive medieval well, estimated to be 50 meters deep. According to local legend, a treasure… or a knight… once disappeared here.

"Rochefort" comes from the Latin rocha fortis – literally "fortified rock" – a reference to the castle's strategic location atop a cliff.
