Bern Minster (cathedral)

The most important late Gothic work in Switzerland, it dates back to 1421. The most striking feature of this cathedral is the beautiful entrance surrounded by painted figures. This tympanum from the 15th century (by Erhart Küng) has been renovated: the 234 characters together form the Last Judgment. The damned are on the left, the redeemed on the right in the tympanum. Also interesting are the glass paintings of the windows in the choir. The Münster, exactly 100m high, is the tallest church and the largest religious building in the country. The tower is still inhabited by the tower keepers. You can climb the bell tower. It is the tallest bell tower in the country. Here you can see the largest bell in the country (10.55kg) around which a parade of bears and angels dances. And what do you think... The view of the old city, the surrounding landscape, and the Alps is breathtaking.

Behind the cathedral lies the Münster platform, a (café) terrace with trees and baroque pavilions that towers above the valley of the Aar (beautiful view of the Aare). At the foot of the narrow Mattentreppe or via the picturesque old lift that was established here already in the 19th century. The lift takes you directly to the Matte.
