On the right, we see the 16 white crosses hanging on the fence. In memory of the refugees who attempted to cross the Spree but did not make it. At that monument, you will most likely find the book and pamphlet stall of Gustav Rust; he claims to be here almost always, except when it rains. Gustav can be recognized by a pair of fake handcuffs that he wears as a gimmick. Gustav Rust is a former East German who was expelled by the government; he can tell you everything about what it was like to live in East Germany with a differing political belief and the consequences and reprisals of this: about ten different prisons.
