The Museum Island is one of the most important museum complexes in the world. Since 1999, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Both the architecture of the various buildings and the collection they house are very special.
The museums are located on the northern part of an island that lies between the Spree and the Spree Canal. The island is accessible via a bridge from different directions. Since all the buildings in this part of the island, except for the Deutcher Dom, house a museum, it has been referred to as Museum Island since 1870.
In recent years, Museum Island has been undergoing a major renovation. The museums are being renovated one by one, and the infrastructure of the entire area is also being improved. Eventually, the museums will be connected by an underground passage. Above ground, they retain their own identity, but underground, they form one large art complex.
