The Wendhusen Monastery, also modernized Wendhausen, in Thale is the oldest monastery in the territory of today's state of Saxony-Anhalt and is the start and end station of the Harz Monastery Hiking Trail. It is the only Carolingian building and the oldest canoness monastery in eastern Germany. After secularization around 1540, it became a manor.
The monastery was founded around 825 by Gisela, the eldest daughter of the East German Count Hessi, who had received the office of count from Charlemagne in 782. As the wife of Count Unwan, she was widowed at an early age and became known as the builder of several monasteries, not only in Wendhusen but also in Karsbach in Franconia. Her two daughters Hruothild and Bilihilt became the first abbesses of the monasteries of Karsbach and Wendhusen respectively. Liutbirg, who came from Solazburg and was closely related to the founders, was given a cell at the Altmichaelstein/Volkmarskeller, which belonged to Wendhusen, where she lived for 30 years.
