Old Köpenick

Alt-Köpenick is the oldest street in today's Berlin district of Köpenick. It was established towards the end of the 12th century during the founding of the settlement of Coepnick as the only street for the first inhabitants of the service settlement of Köpenick Castle and new migrants. Initially, it was therefore called Schloßstraße. In the following centuries, the street underwent many changes both in its course and in its development, receiving new names. The current street runs from Schlossplatz/Grünstraße or the Lange Brücke parallel to the Dahme northwards to Dammbrücke. It is only fully usable for tram traffic, as the southern section is located in a pedestrian zone.
Only after 1300, when the settlement had to be expanded eastwards, was the street accordingly extended and the newly added section was named Marktplatz.
