Reinsberg is a municipality in the district of Mittelsachsen, about 35 km west of Dresden, near the towns of Freiberg and Meißen. The municipality, which comprises nine districts and has a population of 3,000, is located east of the Freiberger Mulde in the center of the Free State of Saxony. With the founding of the Altzella Monastery in the middle of the 12th century and the discovery of silver ore around Freiberg, rural settlement areas emerged.
The municipality of Reinsberg is situated amidst the eastern foothills of the Ore Mountains between the Eastern Ore Mountains and the Lommatzscher Pflege. The western boundary of the municipality is formed by the Freiberger Mulde. Flowing from the south to the north is the Bobritzsch, which flows into the Freiberger Mulde within the municipality between Bieberstein and Hirschfeld. The Rothschönberger Stolln, a water drainage tunnel of the Brander and Freiberg mining area, runs through the municipality. It has a shaft in the area of Neukirchen.
