Kempenich is a local community in the district of Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality association of Brohltal, which has its administrative seat in Niederzissen. Kempenich is the largest town in the upper Brohltal and a state-recognized recreational area.
The municipality is located on the eastern fringe of the Hocheifel, about eight kilometers northwest of Mayen. The Hohe Acht rises about seven kilometers southwest of Kempenich, while Lake Laach is just under ten kilometers to the east.
