Langel borders Ranzel to the southeast and Lülsdorf to the south, both districts of Niederkassel, as well as the Rhine to the west and the Cologne district of Zündorf to the north. On the western bank of the Rhine are the Cologne districts of Godorf and Sürth.
Langel was first mentioned in a document in 965 as Langalon. Since the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the district of Porz in the Duchy of Berg. In 1635, immigration regulations were enacted. Thereafter, every new citizen had to take an oath. Every villager was required by order of the Abbey of St. Pantaleon to take care of the church tower and the bells of the catholic village church. Furthermore, the pastor and the sexton were to be provided for.
