Ochtersum

Ochtersum is a locality in the south of Hildesheim. The fact that it now has just under 9,000 inhabitants is primarily due to the steadily growing new housing developments, which are already touching the city limits. Ochtersum is only separated from the neighboring locality of Barienrode in the municipality of Diekholzen by a narrow strip of farmland, so that growth is reaching its limits.
The first known document mentioning Ochtersum dates back to a document from the year 1132. In it, a Conradus de Ochtereshem appears as a witness to the document. The name "Ochtereshem" can be derived as the "home of Ochtger" or "Ortger." This personal name can mean "swift spear." The settlement appeared in these centuries as the seat of a Hildesheim ministerial family in the documents. The street name "Am Burghof" likely recalls the knight's seat located there.
