If you take the time to learn about Oberammergau, there is a good chance that the first thing you will discover is the Passion Play, performed every ten years since 1633. It originally started as a mystery play from the Middle Ages dedicated to the suffering of Christ before and during his crucifixion. Most of the time - as will also be the case in Oberammergau - the actors are local amateurs, many of whom have participated in the event for many years along with their entire families. They still honor the promise made in 1633 by their ancestors when they were spared from a plague epidemic that caused many casualties in the region.
