The Birgelener Pützchen is a Marian pilgrimage chapel located in the forest between the upper town of Wassenberg and Birgelen in the Heinsberg district.
Guided by the Stations of the Cross built in 1910, the chapel with the Willibrordus spring is situated right at the edge of the eastern steep slope of the Rur valley in the forest. According to tradition, St. Willibrord is said to have founded the mountain church in Birgelen around the year 705, which stood at the location of today's cemetery chapel. The first stone prayer house was built in 1795; and around 1850, the spring was enclosed and a chapel was built over it. The octagonal main room of the chapel at the Pützchen was added in 1933 to the smaller building section constructed in 1863, which has a rectangular floor plan. The water from the Pützchen is believed to have healing properties and is said to particularly alleviate eye ailments due to its silica content.
