Princely House of Weimar

The princely house at the Platz der Demokratie in Weimar is a former palace, parliamentary, and government building that today houses the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.
The architect Anton Georg Hauptmann built the building from 1770 to 1774 based on plans by the princely land master builder Johann Gottfried Schlegel. The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1770. In fact, the Princely Land Treasury was supposed to move into the building, but this never happened. In 1774, the Weimar city palace, the Wilhelmsburg, burned down, and Duke Karl August then occupied the still-unfinished treasury building, which was henceforth called the princely house. He would later regret this move, as he had to witness the 74-meter-long ceiling collapsing in 1781 due to structural defects, likely attributable to Hauptmann's work. Hauptmann apparently had cheaper material used to increase his own profit. Schlegel lost his position because he allegedly made insufficient fire safety provisions for this building. This happened in the wake of the palace fire of 1774.
