Ziethen Street

The Ziethenstraße is an early workers' settlement with 52 uniformly designed, simple brick houses in Lünen-Süd in Westphalia.
It was built by Harpener Bergbau AG in 1898 for the families of the coal miners of the Preußen colliery. Each house could accommodate four families, but the city allowed a maximum of three. Large gardens, straight rows of trees, stables behind the houses, and toilets installed there were building standards of that time. Unusually, there was an agreement between the city and the builder about the establishment and maintenance of the infrastructure, which was largely imposed on the mining company. Thus, it had to pay not only for the schools, churches, and police station but also the salary of the police officer. Furthermore, this led to the construction of the first train station in Lünen in 1896, primarily intended for coal and worker transport.
