House Langen

Haus Langen is a former manor with a watermill in Westbevern. It is located southwest of the Telgt district of Westbevern on a weir in the Bever shortly before its confluence with the Ems and borders on the 31-hectare nature reserve Haus Langen, named after the house.
House Langen owes its name to the Knights of Langen. The oldest document testifies to the feudal rule of the Bishop of Münster in 1150. The first documented mention of Langen Castle dates back to 1276 on the occasion of its complete destruction by the Bishop of Münster, Everhard von Diest. It was not subsequently rebuilt. Until 1378 it was owned by a family of the same name, then it passed to the von Letmathe family via an heiress. During the Thirty Years' War in 1622, the rampart was used as a refuge for the farmers of Westbevern. In 1702 the property passed to Bernhard Engelbert Christian von Beverförde-Werries on the basis of a testamentary provision. His son Friedrich Christian adopted the son of his friend Friedrich Clemens von Elverfeldt zu Dahlhausen und Steinhausen and made him heir. This is how the property passed to the Elverfeldt family, called von Beverfoerde zu Werries.
