Friedberg Castle is the remnant of a spur castle at 300 m above sea level on the mountain above the church of the town of Oppenau in the Ortenau district of Baden-Württemberg. The castle ruins were converted into a residential building in the 20th century.
The castle was probably built around the year 1300 to protect the Allerheiligen Monastery by the administrators of the monastery. In 1319, the castle came into the possession of the Bishops of Strasbourg, who used it as an administrative building. The buildings of the complex were renewed in 1574 and served as the seat of a bailiff. Subsequently, the castle gradually fell into disrepair; in 1605 it was described as "dilapidated." During a great fire in 1615, the castle and the town of Oppenau were engulfed in flames, and later a castle-like building was constructed in the area of the ruins, which is now privately owned.
