Chartreuse Street

The Kartäuserstraße is an inner-city street in Mainz-Altstadt. It is named after the Mainz Carthusians who used to reside in this area. The approximately 90-meter-long street section is considered a monument zone today.
The history of the Carthusians in Mainz began in 1460. At that time, they moved into the house "Zur Großen Eich." Today, this is where house number 29 of Augustinerstraße is located. Subsequently, the Carthusians expanded further in this area. By the end of the 17th century, their property extended to Schönbornstraße. During this century, they also acquired the properties at Augustinerstraße 31 to 35. As a small access point to this large estate, the eaves alley "Kartäuserreul" was also established during this time, which still exists today. The monastery courtyard of the order was located roughly where Kartäuserstraße runs today. Valuable fruits, wines, and foodstuffs were stored and sold in the monastery courtyard. In 1781, the Carthusians finally abandoned their charterhouse. Today, remnants of the walls of the old monastery courtyard can still be found in the buildings at Kartäuserstraße 16, Augustinerstraße 27, and especially at Kartäuserstraße 14.
