Georgen Church

The Georgenkirche is the main church in the center of Eisenach. Here, Martin Luther preached during the Reformation he initiated, making this church one of the oldest Protestant places of worship. Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized in this church. It was the bishop's church of the Protestant Lutheran Church of Thuringia.
The first mention of the church is in a document from 1186. The current layout is a Gothic hall church, which was built from 1515 on the site of the original structure. At the end of the 16th century and again in the 17th and 18th centuries, renovations took place, resulting in a mix of styles visible today. The richly decorated pulpit was created in 1676, the Baroque organ dates from 1719, and the Neo-Baroque tower was added to the church, which previously had no tower, between 1899 and 1902. The bell house from 1585 was remodeled in the 1970s and has since been a residential house. Following the last major restoration in 1978, the church again showcases the historically evolved variety of colors and shapes.
