Narrow House of Eisenach

The half-timbered house known as the "Narrow House of Eisenach" or "Towel" located at Johannisplatz 9 in Eisenach is one of the narrowest and smallest inhabited houses in Germany.
It has a width of only 2.05 m and a floor area of 20 m². A height of 8.50 m grants the building at least two floors.
The exact year of construction of the narrow house is unknown, but its age is estimated to be around 250 years.

On December 4, 1900, EISENACHER TAGESPOST wrote: "A sight of the city of Eisenach is generally hardly noticed by the swarm of tourists. Most are content to visit the Wartburg. However, Eisenach has one of the smallest or the smallest house in the civilized world. ... Tall stately buildings will soon close it in. Then its tiny appearance will attract more attention than it has so far." In issue No. 60 of that newspaper from March 12, 1903, the following is stated about the house:
“The Köhler's little house at Johannisplatz, which has been immortalized in many illustrated newspapers in Germany due to its tiny dimensions, will receive a new façade. The necessary work has begun today.”
