Beschrijving

The Bornstedt Cemetery is located directly opposite the Krongut Bornstedt, in close proximity to the Potsdam Orangery. Not only are residents of Bornstedt buried here, but also numerous prominent figures. Theodor Fontane already reported: What dies in Sanssouci – is also buried in Bornstedt.
The churchyard of the village of Bornstedt, which was incorporated into Potsdam in 1935, has been a favored final resting place for the bourgeoisie and the nobility since the 18th century. The cemetery itself was established as early as 1599. Over the centuries, it has been steadily expanded. Until the establishment of its own parish in 1860, the clergy of the Potsdam town parish church, starting in 1721 St. Nikolai, and from 1848 the Peace Church, cared for the village and the cemetery. Elector Frederick William had purchased the Bornstedt estate in 1664. At that time, it was under the jurisdiction of the Potsdam office. From 1734 to 1826, it was independent. Its main task was to provide for the Great Military Orphanage in Potsdam. In 1864, it was made available to Crown Prince Frederick William as a crown fideicommissum estate. A redesign of the churchyard followed starting in 1867. Theodor Fontane visited the cemetery in 1869 and still found the traditional fruit and grass use by the caretaker. This use was only discontinued ten years later. The current state dates back to the resettlement starting in 1897 and a redesign in the years 1911 and 1912. The monument-protected part 1 of the cemetery is no longer being used. It is divided into five parts and the Sello cemetery. Part II of the cemetery also contains a mourning hall, which was built by Reinhold Persius around 1900. Thanks to a fund from the UNESCO World Heritage Organization, the mourning hall was renovated in 2010 in a manner consistent with the monument's protection. A new annex was also created after the one built in the 1970s began to slide on poor ground.
