The Schiffahrtsmuseum (Maritime Museum) is a museum in Bremerhaven. The museum's main building was inaugurated on September 5, 1975 by then-President Walter Scheel, although scientific work had already begun in 1971.
In 2000, celebrating the museum's 25th anniversary, the Hansekogge, a vessel built around 1380 that was found in the Weser River in the 1960s, was unveiled to the public after undergoing a long conservation process in a large condom-filled basin.
The museum consists of the building designed by Hans Scharoun, as well as several museum ships in the old port of Bremerhaven, including the sailing ship Seute Deern and the Wilhelm Bauer submarines.
The Schiffahrtsmuseum was founded in Bremerhaven in 1971 to replace the Museum of Marine Science in Berlin, which had been destroyed during World War II. Their task is to collect, record, research and present documents and objects related to German maritime history. To this end, the museum is equipped with laboratories and technical facilities for the examination, conservation and restoration of different types of vessels, as well as other objects. It also has a wide range of artifact collections and a dedicated archive and specialist library with adjacent reading room. And the permanent exhibitions include ships from the prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods, German shipping in early modern times, military transport (with the 1945 class submarine "Seehund" as the main test) and industrial ship engines.
