Warne

The Warne is an approximately 24 km long left or western tributary of the Oker in Lower Saxony, which originates near Salzgitter-Bad.
The stream, flowing through the independent city of Salzgitter and the district of Wolfenbüttel, springs south of Salzgitter-Bad at the transition between the northern and southern midsection of the Salzgitter Ridge. Its source is located in the Liebenburg State Forest between Liebenburg and Salzgitter-Bad. The upper course often runs dry, with only the inflow from the Plünneken spring providing a more consistent water flow. From there, it flows through the old town of Salzgitter-Bad. However, the Warne has been piped within the city since 1955 and only resurfaces at the eastern exit of the town. It is the discharge point of the Salzgitter-Bad sewage treatment plant. From here, it flows eastward over Gielde and Werlaburgdorf. It is crossed by the 130-meter-long Warnetal Bridge of the A395, where rest areas are also located on both sides. Furthermore, it flows around the Oderwald on its southeast side and northward parallel to the Oker towards Dorstadt. At this locality, it bends eastward and flows into the Oker, which comes from the south, in the estate park of the manor. The course is predominantly canalized, with only short sections near Werlaburgdorf and Heiningen having been renatured.
