Niederwürzbacher Castles

The Niederwürzbach palaces are a Baroque ensemble in Niederwürzbach consisting of the country houses Annahof and Monplaisir. The buildings are grouped around the Würzbacher pond. The most significant building of the ensemble, the Philippsburg Palace located in the district of Ommersheim, no longer exists.
In the last quarter of the 18th century, the Counts of der Leyen had a total of five small castles or country houses built near their residence in Blieskastel, within an extensive park area around the Niederwürzbach pond. The originator of this design is still unknown; however, court architect Peter Reheis is documented in various accounts. In the First Coalition War, the complex was destroyed in 1792. The estate "Bon voisin," the pleasure palace "Monplaisir," and the Annahof survived the wars, while the pleasure palace "Bagatelle," along with the grand Philippsburg Palace, were lost.
