Kaiser Wilhelm Museum

The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum is the main building of the Krefeld Art Museums, which focus on art from the second half of the 20th century. The building was inaugurated in 1899 and is protected as a historical monument of the city of Krefeld.

As early as 1872, the Krefeld architect Hugo Koch suggested creating a museum instead of a statue for Kaiser Wilhelm I. However, the time was not yet ripe for such ideas, and so a sculpture was created during the Kaiser’s lifetime, which was unveiled on June 27, 1880, in the Stadtgarten at St.-Anton-Straße. In World War II, bombs destroyed the bronze sculpture.
