The Bishop's Mill is located on Daruper Straße. Its history dates back to the 12th century. It was a fief of the Bishop of Münster and belonged to his table goods. In 1598, the mill was released from feudal obligations and sold to the Barons of Graes zur Loburg. In 1624, Bishop's Mill was leased for the first time to a miller. In 1905, the tenant and miller Hubert Seesing acquired it. To this day, the mill and the property have remained in the possession of this family.
In 1984, Bishop's Mill was placed under monument protection, and the current owner Heinz Seesing began extensive renovation work in 1986, which was completed with the restoration of the mill works in 2009.
In 2006, the Bishop's Mill Initiative was founded. It is a circle of friends of the owning family, private individuals, and the neighborhood of Bishop's Mill. The initiative has made it its goal to keep this monument in the public's consciousness by organizing exhibitions, cultural events, and lectures, as well as folk festivals. The schools and youth are particularly involved in this effort.
Exhibition Hety Thier
On the second floor of Bishop's Mill, there is also a small exhibition about the artist Hety Thier (1919-1952), who fled from the Academy of Arts in bomb-threatened Berlin to Bishop's Mill in 1943, later lived and worked in Harle. The exhibition displays photos from her too-short life and some of her works, among which the pen drawings for Voltaire's "Candide" (published by Elsinor Verlag in 2018) are of particular significance, acquired by the Ostwall Museum in 1949.
