The gas sphere container in Wuppertal, in the Wuppertal district of Vohwinkel, was built by the MAN plant in Gustavsburg in 1958 and was considered at the time to be the largest gas sphere container in the world.
The gas container is located near the Sonnborner Kreuz in an industrial area, which, with about 200 residents under the name "Industriestraße," is also a statistical district of Wuppertal, at the intersection of Industriestraße and Essener Straße. It is operated by the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke, for which it was built in 1958. The sphere, with a diameter of 47.3 meters, was made from 30 mm thick steel sheet and has a volume of about 55,000 m³ and a surface area of about 7,000 m². The storage capacity is a maximum of 270,000 m³ of natural gas, making the structure the largest gas sphere container in Germany. In the mid-1980s, it was still listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gas sphere container in Europe. The transfer station supplies 75 percent of the Wuppertal urban area and was modernized at the beginning of 2005 during an eight-month construction phase for 850,000 euros.
