Gnewikow

On his hikes through the Mark Brandenburg, Theodor Fontane also came to the village in July 1859: “Gnewikow, Karwe, and Wustrau are noble estates,” he wrote on the occasion of a walk around Lake Ruppin.
The village, which was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century, was first mentioned in a document in 1252. Until the 17th century, the place consisted of a manor, two noble residences, ten farms, and two cottager plots. The conditions in the village were largely determined by the noble family von Woldeck, which ruled over Gnewikow from 1307 until around 1850. Other families also held ownership shares. Around 1490, Gnewikow belonged to the core imperial immediate territory of Ruppin, ruled by the Counts of Lindow-Ruppin. The last Woldeck in Gnewikow was Ernst von Woldeck, whom the peasants in the village referred to as the lake baron. Besides the manor district, there existed the peasant community, which was significantly reduced in favor of the estate owners in the 19th century. The street village developed in the direction of Wuthenow.
