The Church at Stölpchensee is the village church of the former village of Stolpe, which is now part of the Berlin district of Wannsee. The hall church with crossing tower was built in the years 1858-1859 by Friedrich August Stüler according to an idea of King Frederick William. The king himself designed the rose window.
Due to the danger of collapse, the old, medieval half-timbered church of Stolpe had to be closed. After unsuccessful attempts to support the church with a massive wall, the church building was finally demolished in 1854. The congregation moved to a school building, but because the number of worshippers attending a service decreased, the construction of a new church was given all priority. A building official employed by the government in Potsdam made a design for a simple village church, but the design was rejected by the king. Frederick William was often involved in church building projects and now asked the Prussian master builder Stüler to provide a design. The additional costs of the new design were borne by the king.
